5 Tips for First-Time Bakers

Are you a first-time baker looking for a few helpful tips to make a yummy batch of baked goods? Then you’ve come to the right place!

Today, Sweet Melissas Patisserie gives 5 tips on what you can do in preparation for your new baking adventure.

Baked good brownies with raspberry and chocolate toppings

1. Read the recipe very carefully

You need to be aware of how much time the entire process will take, be certain you have all the baking supplies and ingredients you need, and make sure that each ingredient is in its correct state required, such as prior refrigeration or softening beforehand.

2. Use cookie dough scoops for portioning.

By utilizing cookie dough scoops, the portions will be uniform and can bake more consistently than if you just randomly portion the batter.

3. Use silicone mats or parchment paper

Parchment paper or silicone baking mats allow a barrier between baked goods and the pans to prevent sticking. The wonderful result is that the goodies remain intact while being removed from the pans. Plus, baked goods usually cook more evenly when placed upon parchment paper or silicone. Lining pans with parchment paper is great for easily removing items once they are adequately cooled.

4. Know your oven well

Get well–acquainted with your particular oven so that you know if it tends to cook quicker or slower than the indicated times your usual recipes call for. Since oven temperatures can vary considerably, take a peek at your baked goods often to prevent them from over-baking and potentially burning. Investing in an oven thermometer, if you don’t already own one, is a terrific way to check the accuracy of your oven.

5. test with a toothpick

Insert a toothpick into the center of your baked goods when you believe they are almost finished baking. Runny batter signifies that you need to give your goodies more time to bake, as the toothpick needs to come out with either a few crumbs on it or just dry. If the outside seems ready but the inside is not, cover with aluminum foil and bake until the inside is done.
